John R. Crooks was named as Utilities Manager by the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission effective April 6th, 2010 at its regular meeting on Monday, April 5th, 2010. Since 2001, Mr. Crooks has served as the Water Superintendent for Shakopee Public Utilities. During this time, Shakopee was one of the fastest growing communities in the metro area. Under the direction of Mr. Crooks, the water system serving Shakopee has increased in size from 8 to 18 production wells to meet the growing demands of our customer base which increased from 6,000 accounts to 10,500 accounts. Mr. Crooks has extensive experience in water supply management, long-term planning for utilities, utility rate development, and project management. In addition, Mr. Crooks presently serves as the Safety Director and Commission Secretary for Shakopee Public Utilities. Mr. Crooks lives in Prior Lake in an area served by Shakopee Public Utilities and has 3 children.
Planning and Engineering Director
Joseph Adams has served the Commission since 1992. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1983 with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering and received his Professional License in 1991. After graduating from college, Mr. Adams worked for the U.S. Navy’s Facilities Engineering Command in the mobile utility facilities generation and distribution program for nine years.
Marketing / Customer Relations Director
Julie Ambach has over fifteen years of experience in the Utility industry including marketing, public relations, economic development, product management and business management. Prior to joining Shakopee Public Utilities, Ms. Ambach has worked for the Central Minnesota Municipal Power Agency, the Imperial Irrigation District, Alliant Energy, and also Shakopee Public Utilities where she previously served as the Marketing/Key Account Director. Ms. Ambach is a graduate of Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
Finance / Administrative Director
Renee Schmid is the Director of Finance and Administration. Renee joined the Utility on November 1 st , 2007. She graduated from the University of Minnesota , Duluth in 1983 with a Bachelors of Business Administration Degree majoring in Finance with minors in Accounting and Economics. After graduating from college, Ms. Schmid joined US Bank and spent eighteen years in various positions in finance and operations. Prior to coming to Shakopee Public Utilities she was the Manager of Finance & Administration for Institutional Financial Services at US Bank and served as the Chief Administrative Officer for the Institutional Trust, Asset Management, and Mutual Fund Divisions.
Marvin Athmann has served the Electric Distribution Industry since 1971. Mr Athmann is a graduate of the Northwest Technical College Electrical Line Workers Program and holds a Lineman’s License with the Minnesota State Board of Electricity. Previously employed by the Redwood Falls Public Utility Commission, he has been with Shakopee Public Utilities since 1974.
Lon R. Schemel joined Shakopee Public Utilities as Water Superintendent on November 1st, 2010. Prior to that, Mr. Schemel worked for the City of Rockford, Illinois as a Water and SCADA System Supervisor for the City of Rockford, Illinois Water Department since 1986. Before that Mr. Schemel was a water plant operator from 1978 until 1986 when he became part of Rockford’s management team. Mr. Schemel has extensive water system management capabilities and has supervised the operation of well sites, managed the operation of the SCADA system, and served as the GIS coordinator for the City of Rockford’s Water Division. In addition, Mr. Schemel has a Class A water operator’s license in both Minnesota and Illinois.
